Some gardens call for bold, modern materials. Others call for something more timeless. This one fell squarely in the second camp - a traditional garden built around materials that have been trusted for generations. Bluestone, natural stone, brick-style pavers, and a full masonry pizza oven. Nothing trendy, nothing that'll look dated in five years.

The bluestone path sets the tone right away. The flagging is laid in a classic pattern with tight joints and a clean edge - no gaps, no drift. It flows naturally through the planting beds and feels like it belongs. That's the thing about bluestone: when it's done right, it looks like it was always there. Same goes for the running bond brick-style path we used in the front - that gentle curve through the landscape beds gives the whole front yard a real sense of intention.

The retaining wall is Belgard's Tandem block, capped with Castohn Olympic pavers. We also used those same Castohn caps as stair treads on the steps leading up through the wall. It's a clean detail that ties the whole wall system together - same material, different application, consistent look throughout.

Then there's the pizza oven. This is a full natural stone masonry build, not a kit. The stacked stone veneer, the chimney, the stone cap details - all of it was built on-site. It anchors the patio and gives the space a genuine gathering point. Paired with the Castohn paver patio underneath, this backyard has the kind of bones that hold up for decades with minimal maintenance.

Projects like this one are a good reminder that classic doesn't mean boring. The right combination of materials - each one proven, each one chosen for a reason - adds up to something that feels cohesive and well-crafted. That's what we aim for every time we put a plan together for a Hillsdale property.
