When I say flagstone what comes to mind? Large squares and rectangles, irregular "crazy paving" or large pieces with small terrazzo type mosaics in between. They are all flagstone! So if you're designing a landscape around a flagstone be sure to plan HOW your patio will be laid.

Large irregular flagstone rely on great big slabs and can look more monolithic with fewer joints. Especially if you use thicker flagstone and tight joints of 1/2 inch or less. Dimensional 3 piece paving has a long history and can look timeless with many house styles. The most common stone for this layout is bluestone. Cobblestones are NOT flagstone but are an even stronger natural stone paving often as thick as it is wide! I haven't even touched on stone color. The most common flagstones are sedimentary rocks like bluestone and sandstone. Although you can occasionally see quartzite used as a strong scratch resistant patio and black slate is a metamorphic rock with striking features like its black color and tight flaking layers.

Once you open your eyes to the world of natural stone in your landscape all you'll see are possibilities!
